OUR WORK

Environmental Sustainability, Food security and Climate Justice

HWC-Kenya (Humanity for Women and Children in Kenya) is actively promoting sustainable farming practices, climate-resilient products, and market access to farmers across the country. Their efforts are aimed at addressing key challenges in agriculture, such as climate change, resource depletion, post-harvest losses and market volatility to ensure long-term agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Sustainable Farming Practices

HWC-Kenya encourages farmers to adopt environmentally friendly and resource-efficient agricultural techniques. These practices aim to maintain soil fertility, conserve water, reduce pesticide use, and minimize environmental degradation. Examples of sustainable practices promoted include:

  1. Crop Rotation & Intercropping: This helps in enhancing soil health and reducing the risks of pests and diseases, which can often decimate entire harvests when monoculture farming is practiced.
  2. Organic Farming: Encouraging the use of organic fertilizers and natural pest control methods to reduce the dependency on chemical inputs and to produce healthier crops.
  3. Conservation Tillage: This method involves minimal soil disturbance to maintain the structure of the soil, improve water retention, and reduce erosion.
  4. Agroforestry: Integrating trees into farming systems to provide shade, improve soil quality, and reduce wind and water erosion.
  5. Affordable, accessible finance: Farmers need to access affordable finance to boost their farming.

Climate Resilience Products

The impacts of climate change, such as irregular rainfall, droughts, and floods, are severely affecting agriculture in Kenya. HWC-Kenya works to provide farmers with access to climate-resilient products and techniques that allow them to adapt to these changing conditions:

  1. Drought-Resistant Crops: They promote the cultivation of drought-resistant varieties of crops like maize, beans, and sorghum, which are more resilient to water scarcity.
  2. Water Harvesting Technologies: Farmers are encouraged to invest in rainwater harvesting systems and water-efficient irrigation technologies, such as drip irrigation, to manage water resources better.
  3. Improved Seed Varieties: Introducing seeds that are more resistant to diseases, pests, and changing weather patterns ensures higher yields even in challenging conditions.
  4. Soil Health Management Products: HWC-Kenya also promotes products like soil conditioners and bio-fertilizers that improve soil health, making it more resilient to environmental stress.

Market Access and Linkages

HWC-Kenya also focuses on improving the access that farmers have to local and international markets, ensuring that they can sell their produce at fair prices and with minimal exploitation. This is crucial in ensuring that farmers can generate sustainable income and invest in the long-term sustainability of their farms. Their market support efforts include:

  1. Market Information Systems: Providing farmers with a platform to sell their products direct to farmers while providing information about market demand, pricing trends, and best-selling periods so they can plan their production cycles more effectively.
  2. Value Addition and Processing: Encouraging farmers to engage in value-added activities, such as processing fruits, vegetables, and grains into packaged products. This not only increases their income but also reduces post-harvest losses.
  3. Cooperatives and Group Marketing: Farmers are encouraged to form cooperatives or groups, which increases their bargaining power when negotiating with buyers, reduces transaction costs, and allows them to access larger markets.
  4. Linking to Export Markets: HWC-Kenya helps farmers explore opportunities in export markets for high-value products such as organic vegetables, fruits, and flowers.

By focusing on these three pillars—sustainable farming practices, climate resilience, and market access—HWC-Kenya is equipping farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources they need to thrive in a changing climate while improving their economic stability. This holistic approach contributes to the overall goal of improving food security, promoting environmental sustainability, and enhancing the livelihoods of rural communities.
