OUR WORK

Protection and Human Rights

HWC-Kenya is committed to safeguarding the dignity, rights, and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals and communities through comprehensive protection and human rights programming. We work to create safe, inclusive, and resilient communities where women, children, youth, refugees, persons with disabilities, and marginalized groups are protected from violence, discrimination, abuse, and exploitation.

Our interventions promote child protection and safeguarding, ensuring that children grow up in safe and nurturing environments free from neglect, abuse, exploitation, and harmful practices. We strengthen community-based protection mechanisms, raise awareness on children’s rights, and uphold safeguarding standards across all our programmes.

HWC-Kenya also implements initiatives aimed at the prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV) through awareness creation, psychosocial support, referrals, survivor-centered services, and community engagement to challenge harmful social norms and promote gender equality.

In addition, we provide legal aid, civil documentation support, and rights awareness to help vulnerable populations access justice and essential services. Guided by the principles of human dignity, equality, and non-discrimination, we advocate for the protection of religious minorities, freedom of belief and worship, and peaceful coexistence, fostering inclusive communities where every person can exercise their fundamental rights without fear, exclusion, or persecution.

HWC-Kenya places special emphasis on supporting religious minority communities, particularly vulnerable Christian minorities and refugees living in fragile and displacement settings. We are committed to promoting the right of every individual to freely practice, manifest, and express their faith without fear of discrimination, exclusion, violence, or persecution.

Through partnerships with communities, faith leaders, government institutions, and humanitarian actors, HWC-Kenya strives to advance human rights, strengthen protection systems, and empower vulnerable populations to live with dignity, safety, and hope.

HEALTH INTERVENTIONS

Humanity for Women and Children (HWC-Kenya) is dedicated to improving health outcomes for vulnerable and underserved communities by implementing targeted health interventions. Recognizing that health is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for development, HWC-Kenya focuses on addressing critical health challenges that disproportionately affect women, children, and marginalized populations.

HWC-Kenya’s health programs emphasize:

  1. Maternal and Child Health:
HWC-Kenya works to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates by providing access to prenatal care, safe childbirth practices, postnatal support, and education on family planning. The organization collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure that women and children receive quality healthcare services, even in remote areas.
  2. Community Health Education:
HWC-Kenya empowers communities with knowledge about disease prevention, hygiene, nutrition, and mental health through workshops, campaigns, and grassroots engagement. These efforts aim to build healthier communities by fostering awareness and encouraging proactive health-seeking behaviors.
  3. Access to Essential Services:
The organization partners with local governments and health institutions to improve access to essential medical services, vaccinations, and life-saving treatments. Mobile clinics and outreach programs ensure that even the most isolated populations can receive necessary healthcare.
  4. Advocacy for Health Equity:
HWC-Kenya advocates for policies that address systemic barriers to healthcare access. This includes campaigning for improved healthcare infrastructure, affordable medications, and equitable resource distribution.
  5. Addressing Specific Health Challenges:
The organization targets pressing health concerns such as malnutrition, communicable diseases, sexual and reproductive health issues, and non-communicable diseases through specialized programs tailored to community needs.

By integrating a holistic approach to health, HWC-Kenya not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also works toward sustainable health systems. Through capacity building, partnerships, and community involvement, the organization ensures that its interventions lead to long-term, impactful change in the health and well-being of the communities it serves.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support

At Humanity for Women and Children in Kenya (HWC-Kenya), we recognize that mental health is an essential component of individual, family, and community wellbeing. Mental health challenges affect people of all ages and backgrounds, yet stigma, discrimination, and limited access to services often prevent many from seeking the support they need.

Our Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) programme works to promote mental wellbeing, prevent mental health disorders, reduce stigma, and improve access to care and support services, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized populations. We provide community awareness and education, psychosocial support, counseling referrals, support groups, and advocacy initiatives that encourage open conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Through storytelling, community engagement, youth empowerment, and partnerships with health providers and local stakeholders, HWC-Kenya creates safe spaces where individuals can share their experiences, access support, and build resilience. We believe that every person deserves dignity, compassion, and the opportunity to thrive regardless of their mental health condition.

As part of our commitment to advancing mental wellbeing, HWC-Kenya leads Beyond the Smile Caravan, our flagship annual mental health advocacy campaign held around World Mental Health Day on 10 October. Guided by the message, “Because Not Every Struggle Is Visible,” the Caravan raises awareness, challenges stigma, and fosters a culture of compassion, solidarity, and hope through awareness walks, community dialogues, storytelling, youth engagement, creative arts, and strategic partnerships.

Beyond the Smile Caravan symbolizes that healing is a journey and no one should walk alone. It serves as a platform for amplifying voices, promoting help-seeking behaviors, and reminding individuals and communities that support, understanding, and human connection are essential to healing and recovery.

Our approach is guided by the belief that seeking help is a sign of strength, that recovery is possible, and that no one should face mental health challenges alone. Through our programmes and advocacy efforts, HWC-Kenya is committed to building a society where mental health is valued, conversations are encouraged, support is accessible, and no one suffers in silence.
